Spent a lazy January 1 reading “The Book of Dust" by Philip Pullman

Wonderful beginning with the atmosphere gradually darkening and the sense of anticipation coalescing until…

the skies open, rain falls, flood happens and the story spectacularly falls apart. I kept re-reading chapters because I was sure I missed something. A lot of something.

“Velocity of Being” is a book that is lovely to behold.

Claudia Bedrick of Enchanted Lion and Maria Popova of Brain Pickings have gathered some of the best writers and artists in this book. The writers wrote letters to young readers about their love for books and artists illustrated those letters. Contributors included Jane Goodall, Yo-Yo Ma, Ursula K. Le Guin, Mary Oliver, Neil Gaiman, Amanda Palmer, Oliver Jeffers, Maira Kalman, Mo Willems, Isabelle Arsenault, Chris Ware, Liniers, Shaun Tan and Tomi Ungerer.

It has been a joy and a privilege to be included in such company for such a good cause : all the proceeds from the project are donated to our local New York public library system.

Knock, knock; who’s there? And off I stumped to answer it.

Knock, knock.
The knocker got a shock.

A naked child greeted the stranger. Not a scrap on but for the big, blue bow in my brown hair, and a black eyepatch. There was a big scimitar of silver paper in my hand and another child perched on the stairs, the spitting image, not so much a twin, more of an optical illusion, like as two peas except that her ribbon was green and she wore a red flag with the skull and crossbones on it knotted round her shoulders as a cloak. Both of us little girls stared at the newcomer with cold, round eyes: what have we here?

What an unwelcome! Such an unwelcome that he couldn’t help but laugh.
